We’ve got an international selection on the cards at the festival for you today, moving from France to the US to South Korea. Watch out for jet-lag.
Haute Cuisine
Foodies, so far forgotten at the festival beyond the popcorn stands, should rejoice at this French comedy following the real-life tale of a provincial chef summoned to be the president’s personal cook. Heavy in culinary chat and visuals of steaming dishes, it’s likely to lead to a few noisy stomachs in the cinema.
Emirates Palace, 6.30pm
Beasts of the Southern Wild
A colourful and charming mythological, anthropological, folkloric and apocalyptic fantasy (trying saying all that in a hurry) that is already generating Oscar buzz for its debut director Benh Zeitlin and cast of first-time actors. Set in “the Bathtub”, a community on the edge of the world, the story follows six-year-old Hushpuppy who goes in search of her mother when nature turns on its head.
Marina Mall, Vox 6, 7pm
Masquerade
A lavish historical drama from South Korea getting its first international screening at the festival, Masquerade is the Dave-like satire of a man who must step into the king’s shoes as a body double. The Korean star Lee Byung-Hun plays both the king and his lookalike, who turns up the heat when he begins to assert himself in power.
